Last week a very amazing musician passed away. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden passed away May 17, 2017 in his hotel room bathroom. Soundgarden was in Detroit on their current tour. The band was also scheduled for Rock on the Range May 19th.
According to CNN Cornell’s death was “sudden and unexpected.” In an updated report for Alternative Press, it states that the Detroit Police have determined that Cornell’s death was a suicide.
The Detroit News reports that a bodyguard found Cornell in his hotel bathroom, slumped on the bathroom floor of his Detroit hotel room “with blood running from his mouth and a red exercise band around (his) neck.” Chris Cornell was pronounced dead at 1:30 AM May 18th.
When the Soundgarden frontman was found dead it was not deemed suicide until the Detroit Police did an autopsy on his body. According to news outlet CNN, “A family friend called 911 around midnight Thursday after he went to check on Cornell and found the musician “unresponsive” on the bathroom floor at the MGM Grand hotel, Detroit police spokesman Michael Woody said. Emergency medical personnel arrived, and Cornell was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.”
After Cornell’s death was pronounced a suicide it was reported that Vicky Cornell became concerned when her husband, the frontman for Soundgarden and Audioslave, told her by phone about his dose of the prescription sedative, which can be used to treat anxiety, she told CNN in a statement. They spoke shortly after Chris Cornell performed a concert Wednesday night in Detroit, she said; he was found around midnight Thursday.
CNN has also reported that the singer had “taken an extra Ativan or two” before he was found unresponsive. Vicky Cornell has also disclosed that after the show that night Chris Cornell was slurring his words and he told his wife he might have taken one or two extra Ativan.
The family of Chris Cornell believe he did not intentionally take his own life, but was affected by other substances. Cornell was a recovering drug addict. According to CNN, “The family will wait for toxicology test results to see whether Ativan may have impaired Chris Cornell’s judgment before his death, attorney Kirk Pasich said.”
There was a tribute to Cornell at the music festival, Rock on the Range. The singer was the leader of the grunge music with the band Soundgarden. According to Independent of the United Kingdom, ”Cornell was one of the most lauded and respected contemporary lead singers in rock music, thanks to his charismatic energy onstage and wide vocal range.”
