The hit Netflix T.V. show 13 Reasons Why has had a positive and negative effect on the world. People have nonstop been reacting to 13 Reasons Why ever since it came out on Netflix. Some people have been making memes that make fun of Hannah Bake killing herself and her tapes that explain why she did what she did.
The band Car Seat Headrest has contributed to the show’s soundtrack. Will Toldeo, a member of Car Seat Headrest, has made his opinion known on Twitter. He talks about how the show is glorifying the act of suicide. He had tweeted “as someone who contributed to the soundtrack for “13 Reasons Why”, I am obliged to tell you all that it’s kind of fucked”, writers: please don’t tell kids how to turn their miserable and hopeless lives into a thrilling and cathartic suicide mission”, and “kids: this is not a narrative you need to subscribe to. go watch ‘spring breakers’ instead”.
Some viewers have been having negative reactions to the show. According to the Telegraph, “Netflix teen drama 13 Reasons Why has been criticized by a mental health organisation over its “dangerous” depiction of suicide and mental health issues.” There have been many mental health organizations who think this show is bad for teens who are depressed. Dr Steven Leicester, head of eheadspace said to The Telegraph: “There is a responsibility for broadcasters to know what they are showing and the impact that certain content can have on an audience – and on a young audience in particular.”
Headspace’s Kristen Douglas said,“The content has created a lot of distress in recent weeks. People have disclosed their own distress, and that they’re being triggered. It’s great that people are talking about being in distress but this is also magnifying those vulnerabilities.” The fact is that some of the scenes in the show have content that can negatively trigger someone who has gone through something similar to what was depicted in the show. Even though there are warnings in the beginning of episodes with controversial scenes, people get so involved in the show that they don’t really pay attention to the warning. Some people are saying they thought it would be better to leave her character’s death to the imagination.
